With Hackers getting smarter and technology growing, it is becoming imperative to secure your private information by utilizing strong and complicated passwords. Of course, you want to try and think of a password that is not only strong, but unique enough to you that you will remember it without writing it down, or worse forgetting it. Remember, the whole point to having a strong password is keeping out the hackers and fraudsters, not locking yourself out from vital information. Keep in mind that it is best to use familiarity-type words, combine them together and add some other combinations like capitalizing certain letters, using numbers, using special characters, etc. Don’t take the easy route with your password selections and use common words, as these are the first combinations that hackers will use when attempting to infiltrate personal information. If you are using any of the password combinations below, I suggest you change it right away. The following list was provided by PCMagazine and lists the most commonly used ones:

password

123456

qwerty

abc123

letmein

monkey

myspace 1

password 1

blink182

(your first name)

Hopefully this information will help remind the majority of you to secure your personal information and utilize good, easy to remember(familiar to yourself), and strong passwords

Wi-Fi has been a popular form of network to home computers. This mode is relatively convenient and takes less time to setup as it is easy to use. But users always make a mistake by opening it up to hackers. How to safeguard it against hackers? Below is a list of tips that can help you to hack proof your wireless network.

Don’t disclose your identity

Always, a short message is sent by the access points which repeat the network’s name. This is default. The network’s name is known as SSID. This helps people living nearby. People who live next door can detect that you run a wireless network which can help them in getting in. Best way to avoid this problem is to disable SSID. Once you disable, you will run a network that people think you don’t. In simple words, you don’t reveal that you run a wireless network.

Get rid of default passwords

Default passwords can be a problem. When using your network, its always better you change your password to something else than keeping password by default. The reason is, default passwords are a part of access point instruction manual. So if you desire to keep same without changing, then it can take very less time to get the proper password. Try to use a password that is a mixture of letters and numbers.

Keep Updating

Always don’t forget to update. Updates come along with security features. So keep updating. For this, you can visit the manufacturers website.

Encrypting

Using Encryption can be a good way to go. Encryption is of two kinds. Wired Equivalent privacy(WEP) and Wi-Fi protected Access (WPA). The first method is less secure as it uses 64-128 bit, where as the latter method is better which uses 256-bit encryption and is harder to decode. The best of WPA method is it keeps generating encryption keys. This can effectively avoid hackers from getting in. What these keys do is, when a hacker breaks through a key, a new key is in place. Make sure your gear supports this method.

Others

Disable remote management if not needed.

On the access point, remember to turn off pings. This will make it invisible to 802.11b analysis tools.

Alright, try using these steps and see what difference it can bring in. Good luck!

According to McAfee, an internet security company, about 120 countries are coming up with ways to use internet to target financial markets, government systems etc. McAfee said that intelligence agencies were testing other states networks to make out their weakness and their methods were growing as time goes.

The senior vice president of McAfee Avert Labs said that, Cybercrime had become a global issue. It had advanced substantially and was not only a threat to industries but to national security at large.

According to the report, China was the mastermind of Cyber war. The report said that, China was blamed for attacks in the US, Germany and India. The director of the center for Intelligence and Research in Washington said in the report that, Chinese used cyber wars for military goals. The report cautioned that in April Cyber wars on government sites in Estonia looked threatening.

The attacks were initially stemmed from Russia although it denied any wrongdoing. In a country heavily dependent on the internet, thousands of sites were affected in attacks. McAfee predicts that future attacks may be still worse.

Recently EU Information Society commissioner told that cyber attack in Estonia was a warning to the world over. NATO gave a call saying immediate work was needed in order to defend. NATO said that most of its member nations were targeted in one way or other form of cyber-attack, and that the threat had been a challenge to national infrastructure and had become a serious issue which had to be dealt seriously.

“We’re seeing emerging threats from increasingly sophisticated groups attacking organizations around the world. Technology is a part of the solution, and over the next five years we may see international governments take action.”, said McAfee senior vice president.
